Charles Marcus Beal died September 1, 2020 in Miami, Florida. He was born June 14, 1963 in Englewood, New Jersey; the son of Jesse Capps Beal and Mary Alice (Longcrier) Beal. The family moved back to North Carolina in 1965 where he grew up and attended school.
As a youngster he was always called Mark, but the United States Army called him Charles when he enlisted in 1979. The name stuck, modified to Charley by some, and Charley the Tuna by others. While in the Army he was trained as a RedEye Missile Specialist and was stationed at Ft. Bliss, Texas, Ft. Campbell, Kentucky, and at bases in Germany. He was an expert marksman.
Mark was an avid fisherman from an early age and made fishing his life profession. He worked as a mate in Carolina Beach and Beaufort, North Carolina and in Key West, Florida. When family and friends visited Key West he would treat them to a tour of the hot spots on the island.
He participated in numerous fishing competitions in Florida and the Caribbean. When Hurricane Charley hit Havana as a category 3 storm on Friday the 13th of August 2004, he was in Cuba for the annual Ernest Hemingway Billfish Tournament. Attempting to pick up money at the Western Union office to pay for a revised airline ticket, he found the door locked and a sign saying, CHARLEY IS COMING. When the clerk finally opened the door, he waved his passport and said “Charley is here and needs his money!”
He is survived by his mother, Mary Alice Hale; his aunt, Eunice Beal Hassell; brother Jesse Franklin Beal (Kristine); sisters Caroline Beal Haire, Alice Beal Georgia (Jim); step siblings Francis Joseph Hale, III and Margaret Anne Hale; nieces Jessemyn Georgia and Mary Morgan Georgia; nephews Jesse Franklin Beal, Jr, Evan Greer Beal, Owen Watkins Beal, Elijah Jeramy Haire; grand nephew, Aiden Michael Akers; seven Beal first cousins: Katherine Frazier (Charles), William Foy Beal, III (Terry), Anne Beal Hare (Wes), Lynnette Beal Reid (Tim), David Eilers, Lissa Eilers Johnsen, and Mary Barton Eilers Ross (Andrew) and fifteen first cousins once removed.
Charley lived life to the fullest and will be missed by all who knew and loved him. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, September 26th at 4 pm in the Chapel of Mitchell Funeral Home in Raleigh.
