Bobby was born on January 11, 1938 to the late Herman and Maylene Wilkes in Sampson County, N.C. Bobby grew up on the farm where he was born and graduated from Westbrook High School in 1956. Two years later he decided he wanted to serve his country, so he volunteered for the draft and served in the U.S. Army. He served two years on active duty, two years active reserve, and two years inactive reserve. While on active duty, Bobby was assigned to Ft. Jackson, S.C. Ft. Sam Houston, Texas and Ft. Bragg, N.C. Bobby married his high school sweetheart, Lou Ann Blackman. They were married for 56 years. After being discharged from the U.S. Army, Bobby made a career in Banking and was employed by the same bank for over 30 years. Bobby loved the Lord and his church family at Mt. Vernon Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Lou Ann, brothers; Glenn (RoseAnn), Billy (Sandra), Charles (Pam), Garry (Minnie), and adopted family Tracey, Heather, Mary Brown and Emily McCullen, several nieces, nephews and cousins.
A funeral service, officiated by Dr. Shannon Scott, will be held at Mt. Vernon Baptist Church, 7600 Falls of Neuse Rd. Raleigh, N.C. on Wednesday, March 18, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. The family will receive friends at the church from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. Entombment will follow at Raleigh Memorial Park with military honors.
