Mike and family,   
       Regretfully, I did not hear about Barbara’s passing until last Monday when I
called Vickie.  Had we known, my Joe and I would have been there with you all.  I am so sorry.  
        Barbara was always such a good lady and I enjoyed living next to her, Joe and you guys for about five years.  From our childhood I fondly remember those Love family reunions, the good food and us children playing together!  Good memories!
         Our best to you and all of the family as you weather this latest sadness.

Many of my fondest memories of my childhood were spent on Carson Street in a basement filled with ceramics.  Summer after summer I filled my memory bank with memories that are now etched into my every being.  

I remember the days of waking up late and finding breakfast still warm on the counter.  Then I’d go downstairs and Grandma would be there to greet me with a quick “Well, hey there honey.”  I’d spend my days divided between exploring her neighborhood and shadowing her every move in the ceramic shop.  Some of my favorite moments were when Grandpa would come down to the shop and work on a music box or a lamp.  Grandma made beautiful ceramics; Grandpa made them magical.  

I remember the rare mornings that I’d get up early and head out to where Grandma was pouring ceramics.  I can still feel the cool air on my skin as I skipped down the paving stones that led out to the workshop, tall bamboo stalks casting a shadow over my tiny form.  She'd sit me down at the table and plop some slip in my hands and I’d create some atrocious piece of art.  Grandma always humored me by firing it and letting me paint it.  

I spent hours picking out ceramic pieces and paint colors and Grandma taught me how to turn something ordinary into something beautiful.  There were always times I’d get distracted and she’d finish my projects for me.  Because she loved me.  Thank you, Grandma.  


I’ve always considered myself to be extra blessed.  I was born into a family with two sets of natural grandparents who loved and cared for me but one set of those lived far away and our relationship reflected that distance.  But I was lucky because, you see, I also had an extra “adopted” set of grandparents.  It was Barbara and Joe, my “adopted” grandparents, that took the place of my grandparents far away.  It was "Grandma Morgan" who took me in, time after time, and doted on me with the love that only a grandmother can.  It was she that talked to me and knew me and understood me.  Grandma Morgan never saw me as “adopted”, she only saw me as her granddaughter.  I learned so many things from Grandma.  The value of hard work.  The image of what a loving marriage looks like.  Love and kindness.  The ability to take something dull and turn it into something beautiful and magical.  Faith.  Trust in the Lord.  Encouragement.     I know there are no blood bonds that hold Grandma and I together, but there is love.  And sometimes love is stronger than blood.  I love you, Grandma, with my whole heart and am so very thankful that you took me in and wrapped me in years of grandmotherly love.  May you find peace and JOY in Heaven with Grandpa...I'll look forward to seeing you again someday.  Love, Stacie

While I did not actually take Barbara’s ceramic classes, I enjoyed her ceramic pieces. She made one of the smaller ceramic Christmas trees for me, and Joe put the light inside.  She was the only person I could find who had the mold for this particular Christmas tree. She also repaired my grandmother’s very old ceramic cookie jar, and she gave me one of her ceramic crosses. Barbara lived her faith, and I witnessed it when I was on staff at Westminster Presbyterian Church. She was always kind and pleasant, and the first one to lend a helping hand. It is with great sadness that we mark the passing of such a beautiful person in our lives.  We weren't related by blood, but she was always grandma to me.  My sister and I would spend time each summer with grandma and grandpa and we have always loved retelling so many funny and endearing stories from those summer trips.  I'll always cherish the life lessons grandma shared with me and I am thankful for all of the moments I was able to share with her.  I find great joy in thinking of her together again with grandpa, watching over us as we continue on our journey here on earth.

I started doing ceramics back in the late 70's through the late 80's with Jean Goodman.  Barbara was a friend of Jean's and it was my pleasure to be able to share friendship with both her and Jean.  The memories I have of sharing ceramic classes out on Barbara's back porch, picking up greenware orders from her shop, attending ceramic mold sales and sharing good food together, well, they are precious memories to me.   Precious memories of wonderful times with my ceramic friends.  Barbara was a wonderful part of all those times and I am thankful to have shared friendship and a love of ceramics with her.  

Barbara was a very kind talented lady. I met her through her ceramics business. She was a patient teacher, gifted artist and a good friend.  I sincerely treasure each of my ceramics pieces that I made at Barbara’s shop. She always kept  up with how things were going in your life. She also had a great sense of humor.   She and Joe were a very devoted couple who practiced their faith in how they lived their life and loved their church.  I will miss her.

Our beloved  Barbara and Joe "adopted" Cindy and me as two young newlyweds in Raleigh, far from family.  They were examples of love and friendship that shaped our lives and that special relationship lasted for the past 50 years.  We grieve Barbara's passing as we did Joe's and we celebrate their incredible lives, thanking God for them being such an enduring influence in our lives.  We know that Barbara has joined Joe in heaven, and that they both watch from above as we hope to live lives as meaningful and faithful as theirs.  We send our deep condolences to Mike and Doug and we thank them for sharing Barbara and Joe with us.  We will miss you dear Barbara--thank you for making us part of you life. Barbara was a kind lady. She always greeted us with kind words and shared her lovely works of art in ceramics.  She left many memories in everyone’s heart who knew her. She met God and many family members we are sure with open arms. Prayers to the family.
