Ann (Wilberding) Brewer, of Quincy, died at age 88, on June 12, 2024 after a long journey with dementia. She was born on July 23, 1935, the daughter of the late Gertrude (Stone) Baptiste and Edmund Wilberding. Married for 64 years to John Peter Brewer, she is also survived by her children Clark Brewer and his partner Jennifer Johnson, and Elisabeth Brewer Strachan and her husband John. She also leaves behind grandchildren that she loved dearly: John and Scott Strachan, Faustina Millien, Phebe and Lucy Brewer.
Growing up in Vineyard Haven, she had wonderful friends Jackie, Megan, and Sarah. Their first initials gave their group the nickname "The J.A.M.S." In high school, Ann played in the school band, acted in theater productions, and took part in church youth leadership groups.
She studied education at Bridgewater State University (then known as Bridgewater State Teachers College) and played the lead role in the senior year play "The Heiress". Bridgewater classmates became life-long friends. Ann traveled in Scandinavia, visited cousin Lucille Perlot in Rome, and taught school in Hyde Park, MA. She met her future husband Peter Brewer at the wedding of her good friend Virginia Devine.
Ann joined East Congregational Church in Milton and brought her creativity and teaching skills to Sunday school classes, Vacation Bible School, and inner city summer camp initiatives. She received a masters degree in special education from Boston University and taught students with learning disabilities in Taunton for 25 years. It turned out to be the perfect occupation for her, combining her passion for helping others with her love of children.
In retirement, she continued leading Sunday school classes, and other activities at East Congregational Church. She enjoyed photography and was a member of several camera clubs. At the Quincy Senior Center, she and Peter were weekly participants in exercise and sing-along events. Traveling to Scotland, Germany, and Austria they learned about their ancestors. Ann Brewer was a caring and creative person. She will be missed.
A memorial service will be held at East Congregational Church, Milton on Wednesday June 26 at 3:00 p.m., with a remembrance gathering, for family and friends, immediately afterward. Instead of donations, please plant daisies, in her memory, anywhere you can. For the Zoom link, please email [email protected]
