Carl Green III was born on November 23rd, 1964, the only child of Elizabeth Gant and Carl Green II. His family resided in the Lincoln Projects in Harlem, New York. During his childhood, they moved to University Avenue in the Bronx. After his father’s passing, Carl’s mother and her longtime companion Willie Wilson moved the family to Queens Village, New York.
Carl attended Bayside High School and graduated in 1981. Following his graduation, Carl had several jobs in construction and maintenance. In 2008, he began a career with New York City’s Metropolitan Transit Authority where he was employed as a Transit Checker.
When not at work, Carl was most comfortable at home. He could be found in his living room or sitting on the side porch of his house. He liked to watch boxing and football and was loyal to all the New York sports teams. Most of all, Carl loved to cook. Every summer you would find him on the grill in the backyard barbecuing and frying fish for family and friends.
Family, friends and home were central to Carl’s life. Carl shared a special relationship with his mother who modeled the kindness and acceptance that Carl grew to embody. Carl was a great listener with a quiet demeanor. His gentle spirit might go unnoticed in a room until someone would tell a joke, and he would break into a unique and infectious laugh that made everyone feel welcomed and comfortable. He was someone you could be yourself around and confide in because he never judged and could be trusted to keep a secret. His humble, loyal and accepting nature made him a great friend. He lived by the motto, “Do the right thing.”
Carl dreamed of one day retiring to North Carolina, but passed away suddenly and much too soon on October 5th, 2023. Carl was preceded in death by his parents Elizabeth Gant-Green and Carl Green II. While Carl never married or had children, he maintained a close relationship with cousins Vincent Gant and Denise Gant, aka the “Big Three,” Guy Mitchell, Charles Gant III, and Eric Gant. He also formed a special bond with Juju and MJ, who affectionately referred to him as “Pop Pop.”
He will be missed tremendously by his beloved uncles and aunts, Richard and Connie Gant, Samuel and Jacqueline Gant, and a wealth of cousins, neighbors, coworkers, and friends.
A visitation for Carl will be held Saturday, October 21, 2023 from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM at R. Stutzmann & Son, 224 39 Jamaica Ave, Queens Village, NY 11428.
