With her family at her side, Carrol Darlene Lyle, age 76, passed away on October 20th, 2017 after a long and courageous fight with cancer. She was hopeful to the end of her journey to win the battle, enduring the many courses of treatment with grace and bravery.
Carrol was born in Morton, Washington on July 30, 1941 to Glen and Bonita McMahan. She grew up in Randle along with her younger brother Jerry. She attended White Pass High School and later attended Knapp Business School in Tacoma, Washington majoring in bookkeeping.
Shortly after her graduation from Knapp’s she was hired by Walter Cotton and worked at Packwood Lumber Company. Later she moved to Tacoma along with her children Kenneth and Dee. Carrol worked for Purex, and then Lyle Wood Products.
It was at Lyle Wood Products that Carrol met Don Lyle, whom she married on November 5, 1979. Through that union Carrol was blessed with acquiring four stepsons.
After selling the mill and retiring, Don and Carrol built their dream home overlooking the Puyallup Valley and began traveling together. These travels usually included traveling across the United States antiquing or being on a beautiful beach where they could hunt for seashells and enjoy the surf and sand in such places as Hawaii, Los Cabos in Mexico, Australia, Sanibel and Captiva in Florida.
Eventually Carrol and Don found a perfect vacation home in Longbeach, Washington, where many wonderful weekends were spent with friends and family. Together riding the quad, playing in the sand, checking out local events, flying kites on the sunny days and putting puzzles together in front of a fireplace on rainy ones. These were their happiest times.
Carrol and Don traveled to all 48 of the contiguous United States while attending conventions and meetings of the various glass organizations with which they were associated. Carrol was a member of the ACGA (American Cut Glass Association) and held several offices on the Board of Directors. In addition, Carrol was an active member of the Early American Glass Association (pressed glass).
She was a founding member and served as the archivist of the American Wavecrest Club. This organization focused on the glass made at C. F. Monroe Company in Connecticut beginning in late 1890 thru early 1900. She served as the club’s Vice President and President. According to club members, she was a source of knowledge about Monroe and his wares that was truly unbelievable, teaching many about cut glass (her favorite) and the history of Charlie and his company. Anytime there was a question concerning Charlie’s glass, Carrol was the first phone call or email made. A better source could not be found.
In addition, Carrol supported Mary Bridge Brigade and Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital as a member of Lemons Beach Guild and the Holiday Wreath Project. She was an active member of Beta Sigma Phi, receiving her 50-year Golden Circle Award last year from her member sisters in Laureate Delta Beta Chapter.
Carrol had a green thumb, with a knack and love for her plants. Their yard had the most colorful and amazing rhododendrons, azaleas, maples, hosta plants and much more. One year Don purchased a greenhouse in which they started their garden seeds. They were always the first to have fresh lettuce, cucumbers, zucchini, onions, golden beets and the best pumpkins ever. Every year the grandkids enjoyed coming over to select their pumpkins for Halloween.
Besides leaving husband Donald of 38 years, Carrol is survived by children Kenneth Weber(Pauline) and Dee Gahan, brother Jerry McMahan (Loan), stepsons Michael Lyle (Krissy), Patrick Lyle (Becky), Douglas Lyle (Kathy), and Kevin Lyle (Amanda), grandchildren Geoffrey (Allie), Clare, Kristy, Jenny, Mike, Frankie, Tucker (Melanie), Peter (Kelsey), Anna Marie (Jamie), Trevor, Andrew, 16 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild.
The Lyle Family wishes to extend their special thanks to friends Darlene Boysen, Mary Ann Lindsey and Diane Carey for their loving care provided to Carrol and Don during the time of Carrol’s extended illness.
The Lyle Family would also like to thank Dr. Chitaley and the excellent care the nurses in MultiCare Health System Chemo Therapy provided to Carrol over the 2½ years she was in their care.
In lieu of flowers, please consider honoring Carrol's memory with a gift to support Multi Care Health Foundation – Cancer Research Center, P.O. Box 5296, Tacoma, WA 98415-0296
A memorial service is planned for Friday, November 17, 2017, at 1:00 PM at Powers Funeral Home, 320 W PioneerAve., Puyallup, to which all family and friends are invited.
