Steve was born on December 14, 1946 in Washington Courthouse, OH of father Irvin W. Oyer and mother Lois Oyer-Bandy (both deceased). After suffering and battling numerous surgeries and hospitalizations, Steven left us all too suddenly; he will be remembered by all who knew him.
After graduation from Washington Courthouse High School, he attended Bowling Green University OH on a football scholarship for one year, and subsequently was drafted by the Army Branch of the Military. He loved “America” fiercely, and served valiantly, as a Special Forces Green Beret Lieutenant for two tours in Vietnam, he was severely wounded and thus honorably discharged. He earned three Purple Hearts and several Medals of Valor. His studies continued at Bowling Green University after his military duty, where he earned a MBA degree. He proceeded to make his name and garnered much success as a leader in the Real Estate business as well as a Developer and Builder in both Middletown OH and Naples/Marco Island, FL. where he lived for many years and owned serval Real Estate franchises in both states.
Steve was a big man who lived a “big” and interesting life and had many business interest, such as breeding and raising quarter horses and later in life he owned a stable of thoroughbreds for a number of years in Saratoga Springs, NY. He was a superb horseman and horse whisperer and loved to go annually on cattle drives at his friend’s ranch in Montana.
“Speed” was his other hobby, as a pilot in his plane, a captain on his various boats, riding his beloved Harleys and cars and later in life, traveled around the country in an RV. His life was full and well lived, unique and unusual to many, but in the end, he basically managed to do it all.
He was known for his tough guy, imposing appearance and demeanor, but behind the façade was a very compassionate man, generous to a fault for those in lesser stations of life. He treated his many friends with respect, kindness and generosity, always putting himself last.
We, all of us, family and friends, will miss him terribly and will keep him forever in our hearts for the rest of our lives. He is survived by his daughter, Jennifer Anne Oyer (grandson Wyatt), his sister Sherrie, his loving (former) wife Angela Oyer (stepson Bruce and Eric, (Grandsons Sterling & Conrad), his loving stepson Sam Haddad (Melissa, granddaughters Rebecca & Abigail).
At Steve’s request there will be no formal service at this time, a private gathering of spreading of his ashes will be announced at a later date.
In lieu of flowers a donations to “The Wounded Warriors Project” in his name would be much appreciated.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.kayspongerpg.com for the Oyer family.
