Charles Bertolino, a man whose lifetime embodied the virtues of passion, handiness, and love, passed away in Punta Gorda, FL, on October 3, 2024, at the age of 89.
Born on May 11, 1935, in New York City, New York.
Charlie was reunited with his beloved wife, Elsa, who predeceased him on May 17, 2012. The love they shared was the cornerstone of their family, and his devotion to her memory remained steadfast until they met again. His beloved wife was the center of his universe, and together they shared a love that was as deep as it was enduring. Their bond was a beacon of commitment and affection, admired by all who knew them. Charles's love for his family extended to his wife Elsa's family, though not blood related he embraced them and created many joyful memories together. He would be seen dancing, laughing and making sure everyone was attended to.
Charlie's memory is lovingly honored by his family, including his three children, Charles Jr., Paul, and his youngest and only daughter, Emily, who will forever remember their father's unwavering support and boundless love.
His grandchildren, Matthew, Andre, Maria Elena, Ariana, Darius, and his co-caregiver and youngest granddaughter, Isabella Elsa, will miss his stories and the wisdom he imparted.
His legacy continues through his 11 great-grandchildren. Although he never got to meet them in person, because of his health, and the challenge of the distance. He would enjoy seeing their pictures. He would gaze at them in wonder and wish he could spend time with them and sigh, God Bless their beautiful faces.
Though his step-grandchildren, PJ, Justin, and MacKenzie, came into his life through blended family ties, Charlie loved them as his own. Again time and circumstances created distance, but not in thought.
He marveled over watching all his grandchildren grow into adults and become parents. Time passed so quickly.
Charles was also predeceased by his parents, Calogero and Patrina Bertollino, and his siblings, Peter, Alfonso, Josephine, and Loretta. He had fond memories of all his nephews and nieces.
Proudly serving his country as a Navy Reserve veteran, Charles carried the discipline and honor from his military days throughout his life. His Sicilian heritage was a core part of his identity, infusing his life with a rich cultural tapestry that he cherished and celebrated. Following his service, Charles's skilled hands and keen mind led him to become a master carpenter. Renowned for his ability to build anything, he applied his craft with precision and care, leaving a legacy of beautiful and enduring workmanship.
His dedication to helping others shone brightly in his role as a proud firefighter.
In this capacity, Charles's concern for people was evident in every call he answered, every life he touched, and every risk he took to ensure the safety of others. His career was not just a job but a testament to his character—strength, courage, and reliability. Every Christmas he would play Santa Claus and his team would host an event and drive through our town exciting children who were awaiting the big day.
He ruled with a iron fist and a booming voice -. All knew not to cross Uncle Charlie, and many family members used his name to get their children to behave.
"If you don't finish your dinner I'm going to call Uncle Charlie" a very common threat. With that the kids would clear their plates.
But that never deterred the cousins nieces and nephews from running to him, or wanting to spend time with him. He was really a kid at heart and when you saw the twinkle in his eyes you knew there was fun to be had. His fondness of pranks and laughter fueled great adventures and countless stories still shared by all.
He valued time spent with his loved ones above all else, recognizing that each moment was precious and not to be squandered.
Those who knew Charles will remember him for his fierce loyalty, passionate nature, a trait that fueled his every endeavor—from his professional pursuits to his personal interests. His hands, ever so handy, were not just tools of his trade but also instruments of his love, creating, fixing, and nurturing everything and everyone around him. Charles was a loving figure, his heart as expansive as his smile, his arms always open in a welcoming embrace.
As we bid farewell to Charles Bertolino, we celebrate a man who was more than the titles he was known for, Son Brother Husband Father Grandfather Uncle Cousin and Friend.

He leaves behind a legacy of strength, love, compassion, artistry, loyalty, tenacity, and the will to be a survivor. These traits will continue to inspire and guide us.
