Upon graduation, he proudly served his country in the Air Force between 1972 and 1975, during which he received the Good Conduct Medal and the National Defense Service Medal.
After service, Dave earned an associate degree in Nursing and worked for the Colorado State Hospital. He later became an Athletic Coordinator within the Colorado Department of Corrections and, ultimately, ended his professional career as an Athletic Director for Pueblo Parks and Recreation. He loved his work with Parks and Rec and, after recognizing a need for more athletic opportunities in Pueblo, he started a business called Angel Athletics, which offered coaching and tournaments, across several sports, for both children and adults. He ran this business for more than a decade and couldn’t walk through the grocery store without being stopped by someone who had played in one of his tournaments. He was truly a pillar of the community.
He was a wonderful father and the best grandpa. His family, friends and dog feel his loss deeply. We will all miss him and forever remember his passion for learning, laughter and life.
He is survived by his daughter Mary (Hans) Unger; Grandchildren Chase Unger, and Evan Unger; mother Margaret Hernandez; siblings Simone (Ernie) Morales, Greg Hernandez, Donna (Gabe) Gonzales, Deanna Lange, Leigh (Walter) Valdez, Gerard (Margarita) Hernandez nieces Stephanie (Michelle Crusha) Armijo; Danielle (Jeremy) Hague and nephews Paul Armijo, Devyn Hernandez and Philip Lange.
David was preceded in death by his father Nick Hernandez and grandparents Gonzalo and Severa Roldan.
The family would like to recognize Cheryl Nitz. Her sacrifice gave Dave and all who loved him the priceless gift of time.
