Antonia I. Muñiz, 93, affectionately known as “Toni” passed away on January 5, 2024. Toni was born in Mora, NM and lived in Pueblo for 76 years. She moved from Mora to Pueblo in 1948 joining some of her brothers and sisters. She worked as a nanny before marrying Ignacio “Nash” Muñiz in 1950 in Raton, NM and lived in El Paso, TX and Fresno, CA before returning to Pueblo where she helped her husband eventually start and grow the family business, Nash’s Plumbing and Sprinkling acting as the company receptionist. Together they raised their family until sadly she became a widow at age 52. Toni is survived by her 6 loving and devoted children, Angie (Bob) Maestas, John (Jessie) Muñiz, Lily Muñiz, Jimmy Muñiz (significant other, Patty Kroll), Cathy (Russell) Gonzales, and Carol (Joseph) Gomez. 13 grandchildren, Desi, Brianna (Luke - deceased), Nicholas (Molly), Gabriel (Jodene), Juan, Angela, Brandon (Sarah), Michael (Jessica), Abram (Terese), Zachary, Alicia (Ronnie), Justin (Raissa), and Catrysse (Charles). 25 great-grandchildren, Alyana, Lexi, Brock, Tatum, Tanisha (Arthur), Adam, Luna, Yzavel, Josiah, Saetia, Orchid, Blaize, Kael, Joziah, Zailey, Cruz, Zaira, Isla, Maya, Noah, Makyla, Avaya, Zeryn, Cash and Carsyn, and 2 great-great grandchildren, Layna Rae, and Ian. Toni is also survived by her brother, Manuel DeHerrera of Mora, NM.
Auntie Toni/Tía Toni will be forever loved and missed by her numerous nieces and nephews, all of whom she loved dearly.
Preceded in death by her husband, Nash, parents, Pedro and Indelesia DeHerrera, 4 brothers (and 3 sisters-in-law), Pedro, Hilario (Seralia), Nick (Karola), and Felix (Patsy) DeHerrera. 5 sisters (and 5 brothers-in-law), Polly (Felipe) Bustos, Sofia (Norbert) Archuletta, Corina (Feliberto) Lujan, Evangelina (Leo) Pino, and Lorraine (Elias) Chavez and 3 brothers-in-law and 3 sisters-in-law Carlos Muñiz -Jimenez (Micaela), Soledad “Chole” Hinostrosa Muñiz (Pablo), Luz Elena Villanueva- Muñiz (Bruno), and Margarita Garcia- Muñiz (Juan) and grandson, Luke Ortega.
Toni was famous for her tortillas, red and green chile, gorditas, pumpkin pies and especially her legendary lemon merengue pies! She had a deep and devoted faith in Jehovah and loved to read the Bible and have conversations about her beliefs. She enjoyed growing her own vegetables, watching telenovelas, Let’s Make a Deal, and the news, talking on the phone with and visiting with family and friends - often recounting stories from her life, leaving us all with countless memories of joy and laughter while being around her. She liked going to the dog races, picking lottery numbers, working on word search puzzles - her “homework” and anything Elvis. Toni will be remembered forever as a very strong woman, an incredible, loving and beloved mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great grandmother, and sister, and a very special aunt and caring friend, who always helped her family and those around her in any way she could.
Memorial services will be held on January 15, 2024 at 11:00 am at TG McCarthy Funeral Home. Per Toni’s request, there will be no viewing.
