Born in New Bedford on February 2, 1921, Murray was the son of the late Charles and Annie (Kurganas) Goldberg. He was a life-long resident of the city with deep roots dating back to the 1800s.
A graduate of New Bedford High School, Class of 1939, and the Merchant Marine Academy in 1944, Murray served as Chief Engineer on tanker ships supplying troops during World War II.
Upon his return to New Bedford, he worked to establish himself as one of the city’s pre-eminent industrial plumbing contractors, contributing to such major construction works as the New Bedford Hurricane Protection Barrier, Saint Luke’s Hospital, and the Greater New Bedford Regional Vocational Technical High School. In April 1966, Murray was appointed as a Director of the First National Bank of New Bedford.
Murray was the brother of the late Helen and Milton Goldberg, to whom he remained devoted until their passing in 2019. In their retirement, Murray and Helen relocated to Wellington, Florida where they were subsequently joined by their brother.
Murray had a great passion for gardening, cultivating a wide variety of vegetables while in New Bedford and a treasured array of orchids in Florida. He was a wonderful brother and uncle, whose lively spirit and tales of adventure endlessly engaged his family and friends.
Murray is survived by two nieces, Caroline Blecher and her husband Herbert of Colorado and Monica Vafiades and her husband David of Bedford, and two nephews, Bryan Goldberg and his wife Sharon of California and Derek Goldberg of Florida.
