Born in Warwick, he was a son of the late John F. Smith and Barbara A. (Alberigo) Smith. John actively served for 13 years in the U.S. Air Force during the Gulf War. He was a transportation driver for the Providence VA Medical Center for 8 years before his retirement. He was an avid hockey fan for Montreal Canadiens, and was a devote catholic having attended Mass at St. Ann Church in Providence. John had a great sense of humor, always positive, kind, and self-less.
He was the loving father of Kerri Smith and her fiancé Brad Mancini, Sarah Smith and Jonathan Smith and his wife Savannah Smith; brother of Donna Smith and Neil Smith; grandfather of Daniel, Gianna, Kenny, Annabelle, Juliana, Emma and Leo; stepfather of Julian Rodriguez, Erin Corniell and Brian Corniell; son-in-law of Irene Sanchez and Miguel Rodriguez; brother-in-law of Franklyn Perez, Nick Rodriguez and Omar Perez.
Visitation will be held Saturday from 9-12 with a service to follow at 12 p.m. in the Russell J. Boyle & Son Funeral Home, 331 Smith Street, Providence. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, www.woundedwarriorproject.org/donate
