Geraldine Frances (Whitehead) Audette, who fiercely insisted on being called 'Gerri' (and would correct you if you dared use her full name), checked out of this world on Tuesday, November 26, 2024, at the age of 71. It wasn’t supposed to be her time, but in true Gerri fashion, she insisted on doing things her way, including ignoring good advice.
Born in Providence, RI, to Maria Philomena (Rinaldi) and William C. Whitehead, Gerri grew up with a flair for the dramatic, a boisterous laugh you could hear from a block away, and a stubborn streak that could outlast a hurricane. She was a fierce and loyal friend, a lover of all things creative, and a passionate advocate for children. Gerri didn’t just talk about caring for others; she lived it—though often with a side of unsolicited commentary.
Her life wasn’t without challenges, but she faced them with the same tenacity that made her a force to be reckoned with. Gerri’s family often joked that she wasn’t difficult—she was complex. And that’s why we loved her.
She leaves behind her daughter, Jaime Audette, and Jaime’s partner, Michael Baker, who patiently endured her repeated stories and constant updates on the world's doom and gloom. Gerri has been reunited with her late husband and partner-in-crime of 49 years, Richard L. Audette; her brother and co-conspirator in childhood antics, William C. Whitehead, Jr.; and her beloved son, Philip D. Audette.
Gerri’s passing leaves a hole in our hearts—and in the ears of those who enjoyed her infamous "calls to check in," which could last anywhere from five minutes to an hour, depending on her mood.
A funeral mass will be held at Mary Mother of Mankind Church, 25 Fourth St, North Providence on Saturday, December 14, 2024, at 9:30 a.m. Bring your best stories and maybe a pair of earplugs—just in case Gerri finds a way to get the last word in.
