Eleanor Anshel Radin (daughter of Henry and Ruth Turoff) of Providence, R.I. died peacefully on December 12, 2021. The devoted wife and lifelong friend of Hon. William C. Hillman (“Bill”)(deceased), an avid lover of music and the arts (especially opera), and a fierce defender of the environment. Eleanor studied classical piano as a child growing up in Providence where she graduated from Hope High School. She continued her studies at Boston University and spent a memorable summer at the Berkshire Music School (now Tanglewood Music Center) and, decades later, led her to commit to helping develop their first alumni list. That work led her to volunteer with the Boston Symphony Orchestra and eventually to meet many new friends from Friday afternoon concerts at Symphony Hall in Boston. Eleanor like to chose her favorite seat at the back of the hall (balcony level) to appreciate the incredible acoustics in that spot. With Bill, she often went to Lincoln Center to see worthy shows (enjoying the entire Ring cycle 3 times there) and dine at Fiorello’s. Her love of music comforted her and helped express her varied, informed, and passionate emotions.
Eleanor found beauty in the small things around her and could bring out the best in people. She loved the ocean, especially relaxing on the beach in Barrington alone or with friends. What gave her the greatest joy though was her family.
She was like a force of nature – a lifelong learner who could be both headstrong and incredibly gentle. For those that she connected with, she had limitless love, compassion and patience.
“A mighty oak has fallen.”
Eleanor is survived by three children from her prior marriage to James Radin (deceased): Peter, Deba and Michael, and by her grandchildren Chasen, Sara and Sam.
A private family service was held for her in Barrington, R.I..
Donations in Eleanor Radin’s honor can be made to the Providence Music Mansion, 88 Meeting St., Providence, R.I. 02906 and Temple Beth El, 70 Orchard Ave., Providence, R.I. 02906.
