Robert Lee “Bob” Carrico, Jr., 96, of Rock, passed away on Saturday, June 3, 2017 at his home in Lake Shawnee with his family members by his side.
Born April 1, 1921 in Roanoke, VA; he was the son of the late Robert Lee Carrico, Sr. and the late Hallie Bowen Carrico.
Bob loved spending time with his family, antique cars, woodworking, model trains and collecting antiques. He was a 1939 graduate of Matoaka High School, attending Virginia Tech, Concord College and graduating from Bluefield College. Prior to his military service, Bob worked in the oil fields in Tyler, Texas as an engineering assistant for Schlumberger. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, he enlisted and served in the United States Army Amphibious Corp. During WWII, he was a part of the 3rd Engineer Specialist Brigade as a Radio Operator High Speed Manual and a Rifle Marksman. He made 62 beach landings some of which included the Philippines, New Guinea, Biak Island, and mainland Japan. While serving, he was involved in the Bismarck Archipelago and New Guinea Campaigns. He also served in Japan as an Occupational Troop. During his service, Bob received the Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon with 2 Bronze Stars, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with 1 Bronze Star, a Good Conduct Medal, and the Meritorious Unit Award. After graduating from college, he worked as a financial office manager in excess of 40 years, retiring from Universal CIT. In 1953 Bob and his wife, Betty built and operated the Mullens Drive-In Theater for several years. Bob loved to tell jokes and make people laugh. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Mullens and Ashworth Memorial United Methodist Church in Matoaka. Bob was a devoted member of the Lions Club for more than 60 years. He was the recipient of the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award, the highest award the Lions Club bestows.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 65 years, Betty Jean Maxey Carrico.
Those left to cherish his memory include his two sons, Robert L. Carrico, III and wife, Dianna of Lake Shawnee and Timothy Edward Carrico and wife, Karen of Beckley; a daughter, Alicia Carrico Price and husband, Randy (Scooter) of Princeton; two grandsons, Timmy Carrico and Robbie Carrico IV who was not only his grandson, but also his caregiver and buddy; granddaughter, Samara Allison Carrico McGahey and husband, Bob; granddaughter, Ashleigh Aliceson Price; five great grandchildren, Shai, Macklin, Eden, Lucy, and Irelyn McGahey; a sister, Nancy Leigh Carrico Henderson of Winchester, VA; and many beloved friends.
Friends may gather with the family from 6:00PM until 8:00PM Thursday, June 8, 2017, at Roselawn Funeral Home, 450 Courthouse Road, Princeton.
Services to celebrate the life of Robert Lee Carrico, Jr will be held 1:00PM Friday, June 9, 2017 at Roselawn Funeral Home with Pastor Rodney Allen officiating. Following the services Bob will be entombed beside his loving wife, Betty at Roselawn Memorial Gardens.
