He was an athlete. He played High School baseball and Men’s Fast Pitch softball. But he excelled in basketball. He graduated from Sidney Lanier High School where he was Captain of the 1962 State Championship team. There he was chosen for the Third District All-Senior and All-Tournament teams and the All-Confederate Conference team. Huston went on to play basketball for a couple of years at Alabama Christian College. Then he decided to join the Army.
He served his country a total of 27 years and retired from the Alabama National Guard as 1st Sergeant of the Alabama Military Academy. After retirement, he continued serving military families as a contractor with the Family Assistance Program.
More recently though, Huston was simply known to most as “Santa.” He cherished the amazement and delight on the faces of those around the River Region. The magic of the season was indeed carried with him year round.
A visitation for Huston will be held Monday, June 24, 2024 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Ridout's-Brown-Service Prattville, 347 East Main Street, Prattville, AL 36067. A graveside service will occur Tuesday, June 25, 2024 at 11:00 AM at Alabama National Cemetery, 3133 Hwy 119, Montevallo, AL 35115.
