Michael D Chapin

Michael Dean Chapin, Potsdam, passed away with his devoted wife, daughter, and son by his side at University of Vermont Medical Center on Tuesday, December 17, 2024 after a valiant nine-year battle against brain cancer. He would not have been able to fight so hard and for so long were it not for the help of his incredible doctor, Alyssa Thomas and the entire oncology department at UVM.

Michael was born in Potsdam on August 26, 1957 to Deatta Paro and Donald Chapin of Norfolk. He graduated from Norwood-Norfolk Central School in 1977. He retired from General Motors in Massena in 2008.

Before becoming ill, Michael was an active individual with a vibrant energy. He spent a lot of time outdoors, tinkering in the garage, working on projects, and playing sports. When he was not outside, he found joy in spending time watching TV and movies or traveling. Despite the challenges posed by his cancer diagnosis, Michael maintained his unwavering sense of humor and positive outlook on life. When he was no longer able to drive, he loved being able to drive his scooter, showing off his phenomenal one-handed driving skills in the stores. He was a true inspiration, embodying strength, bravery, and resilience until the very end.

Michael was married to Carol Narrow of Potsdam on August 18, 1979 in a ceremony at the Newman Center in Potsdam. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, daughter Cindy (Donald) Koscak, son Christopher Chapin, and grandchildren Matthew, Juliette, and Abigail Koscak, all of Potsdam. He is also survived by his parents Donald and Deatta of Norfolk, brothers Steven (Kathy) Chapin, Macedon and Dale (Skip) Chapin, Norfolk, and sister Tammy (Daniel) Morris, Florida. Additionally, he is survived by brother-in-laws Terry (Yvette) Narrow, Thomas Narrow, and John (Ruth) Narrow of Potsdam and sister-in-law Beth (Jerry) Burkett of Kentucky. He has many nephews and nieces.

Michael’s family expresses their deepest gratitude to the compassionate staff at Canton-Potsdam Hospital for the care he received during his stay. They also extend their heartfelt appreciation to the outstanding staff at the University of Vermont Medical Center, who not only provided medical care to him but went above and beyond to support and care for his family.
