Merrick John Bunstone, age 43 of Colton, NY passed away on October 17, 2023 at the VA Medical Center in Richmond, VA. Family and friends may call at the Garner Funeral Service on Monday, October 23rd from 3-7 pm. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, October 24th at 11 am at the Amvets Post 265 Hall on the Rutman Road in Parishville, NY. Burial will follow at the West Stockholm Cemetery. A luncheon will follow at the Amvets Hall. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Merrick’s memory can be made to the Parishville Volunteer Fire Department and/or unos.org, an organ donation network.
Merrick is survived by his wife Lillian Roy Bunstone; two beautiful daughters, Katie and Marcie Bunstone; mother Karen Bunstone; brother Timothy (Cassandra) Bunstone; nephews Oliver, Henri and Juniper Bunstone; mother and father in law Elizabeth and Marc Roy; sister in law Hanna (Isaiah) Nezezon; nieces Montana, Rory and Jacy Nezezon; sister in law Cecile (Devin) Crary and several aunts, uncles and cousins. He is predeceased by his father John Bunstone.
Merrick J. Bunstone was born on November 27, 1979 in Potsdam, NY to John and Karen Arquette Bunstone. He was a 1998 graduate of Potsdam Central High School. After which, he served his country in the United States Navy, stationed in Japan on USS Vincennes where he earned accreditations for firefighting, air rescue swimming and as an underwater hull technician. While serving, he became ill and returned to the states where he ended up having a heart transplant at the VA Medical Center in Richmond, VA. He was granted his honorable discharge. After recovery, he returned to the North Country where he lived a full 22 years. He worked odd jobs in construction and for car dealerships before landing his dream job. In February of 2009, he became employed as a firefighter\ first responder for Fort Drum Fire and Emergency Services where he created a brotherhood with so many fellow firefighters and eventually became the IAFF Local 105 Union President.
When not at work, he enjoyed volunteering with the local departments of Parishville and West Stockholm and was a member of the Potsdam Elk’s Lodge, the St. Regis Falls Sportsman’s Club and the Moose. He loved riding motorcycles and the side by side, hunting, fishing, processing firewood, going to camp and anything else that involved a lot of fun and time spent with family and friends. In 2013 Merrick met the love of his life, Lillian Roy and married her in 2016. They went on to build a wonderful life and have two sweet little girls.
