Friends may call on Saturday, April 2, 2016 at the Knapp Station Community Church from 2-4 pm. Funeral services will follow at 4pm with Rev. Lee Sweeney officiating.
Gary William Wheeler was born on April 11, 1946 in Potsdam, NY to the late Leo and Lilla Wheeler. He was a graduate of Potsdam Central Schools and then attended Canton ATC for Electrical Technolgy. While in high school he enjoyed playing football and wrestling. On July 9, 1966 Gary was married to Mary E. Dixson. Gary worked for years at Dairy Herd Improvement (DHI) Supervisor. He went on to retire from Four-C Air, as a pipe fitter.
Gary is survived by his wife Mary Wheeler; son Joseph Wheeler of Hannawa Falls; daughters Pamela (Brian) Delosh of Parishville, Kady (Aaron) Clothier of Parishville, and Marcy (Duane “Toby” )Taylor of Potsdam; brother Walter Wheeler of Arizona; sisters, Shirley Lumley of Madrid and Barbara Burdick of Waddington; grandchildren Tanner, Dustin, Jordyn, Shauna, Aidon, Alex, Corbin, Molly, Sophie, Duane and Emma; great-grandson Teddy and lifelong friend Mark Powers. Gary was predeceased by his parents and a brother, Lyle Wheeler and a sister-in-law, Carol Wheeler.
Gary loved the outdoors. He enjoyed trap shooting, skeet shooting, hunting deer and turkeys. He was an all-around outdoorsman. He loved helping out at the 4H clubs and teaching the kids how to shoot. He also was a licensed gun smith and had his own business called “Gary’s Guns.” He was a member of the ATA; past president of the Norfolk Gun Club and was a lifetime member of the NRA.
Contributions can be made in memory of Gary to Ryan’s Hope; the Potsdam or West Potsdam Volunteer Rescue Squads or to the Norfolk Rod and Gun Club.
