William Joseph Ullman was born on January 14, 1923 in Templeton, Iowa to Anthony and Edna Ullman. The family moved to Dubuque, Iowa where Bill spent his childhood. He was a very sharp student who excelled so much he skipped a grade. He graduated from St. Columbkille High School where he was an all-state football player. After graduation he began his studies at Loras College in Dubuque studying pre-engineering.
In 1943 Bill was drafted into the United States Army. He entered into service on June 28, 1943. Throughout his service he rose to Staff Sergeant and served as an Army Engineer in the South Pacific. He received numerous medals including a Good Conduct Medal, American Theater Service Medal, Asiatic Pacific Service Medal, and Philippine Liberation Medal with two bronze service stars, and a Victory Medal. Bill was honorably discharged on February 20, 1946 in Ft. Lewis, Washington.
After his service, Bill studied contract law at Willamette University before becoming a manufacturing rep for sporting goods and banking. He also worked as president of BANC System and vice president of Technology United. He was involved in various organizations and served as president of Portland Bowling Association ABC, president of N.E. Optimists Club, president of Portland Bowling Council, a member of Toastmasters Northeast, and a member of Beta Sigma Phi. He was also Director of USBC Portland Division where he served until his retirement at age 92. One of Bill’s proudest accomplishments was being inducted into the Bowling Hall of Fame.
Bill was a modest, humble man who showed respect to everyone he encountered. He had an analytical mind that allowed him to excel in mathematics, and was well read with a strong appreciation for proper grammar. He will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Phyllis; children, Steve Ullman, Sharon Pease, Sylvia Hathaway, William J. Ullman “Billy”, Deborah Reyes, and Scott Ullman; six siblings; 11 grandchildren; and 9 great grandchildren.
