He attended Washington High School. When World War II broke out he joined the Merchant Marines in 1943 and served in that branch of the service for the next 2 years. He was discharged from the Merchant Marines, October 15, 1943. Bill continued to sail and work as a Merchant Seaman for about 10 years. Following his work as a seaman Bill came home to work on the Hoover family farm with his parents. His father died in 1958 and his mother in 1975.
In1964, Bill went to work at the Portland Post Office. He worked there until he retired in 1992. Until the day he died he still recalled many zip codes he had memorized.
Bill married Janie January 31, 1974, in Reno, Nevada. They enjoyed 20 years together until Janie’s death in October, 1994.
The Hoover Family included a total of 9 children, five boys and four girls. Five of Bill’s siblings have preceded him in death. He is survived by two sisters, Ruth D. Collins ana Mary E. Friesen, both live in the Portland, Oregon area, and one brother James D. Hoover, who lives in Newport, Oregon. There are many surviving nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.
Other surviving relatives knew Bill affectionately as “Bompa”. They are his stepchildren, Genevieve Harder, Woodland, WA., Larry McKinley, Randall Myers and James Myers all of Portland, Oregon. His Grandchildren are Jordan and Steele Myers, Wendy Harder, Christine Faletoi, Misty Chin, Jason, Kody, Melisa and Nakia Mckinley.
