Victor Harold Shackleton

Victor Harold Shackleton, age 95, passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 21, 2023, in Vancouver, Washington. Victor will be remembered for his kindness, sense of humor, and his remarkable intelligence and humility.

Victor is survived by the love of his life and soulmate of 73 years, Roberta (Kirkland) Shackleton; his daughter, Vickie (Shackleton) Deane and her husband James Deane; granddaughter Tiffanie (Deane) Hockett and her husband Cole Hockett, great-grandsons Jordan Hockett and Cameron Hockett; grandson Aaron Deane and his wife Taryn (Brendtro) Deane. He is preceded in death by his parents Harold Shackleton and Faye (Augee) Shackleton.

Victor was born in St. John’s, Portland, Oregon, on December 5, 1928, at a maternity center located on the same grounds where the University Park Baptist Church now stands. He attended Benson High School for grades 9-11 and graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1947. Victor was introduced to Roberta by his cousin Jackie. Commenting on that first sight, he is quoted as saying “I was goner.” They married on August 13, 1950, at the St. Johns Christian Church.

He proudly served in the US Air Force Strategic Air Command from 1951 to 1956 during the Korean War. He was a Staff Sergeant for B36 Aircraft Mechanics in the 92nd Bombardment Wing out of Fairchild Air Force Base, Spokane, Washington. Victor’s unit was part of “Operation Big Stick” that flew 20 B36 bombers to Okinawa as a scare tactic for North Korea.

Victor graduated from Oregon State University in 1961 with a degree in mechanical engineering, achieving National Pi Tau Sigma honors and in the top 10 percent of his class. He went on to have a distinguished civil service career with the US Army Corps of Engineers, retiring in 1987 as Value Engineer for the Portland District.

A Celebration of Life service will be held for Victor on Saturday, March 16, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. at University Park Baptist Church, 4340 N. Lombard Street, Portland, Oregon.
