Her parents were Helen and Ned Myers of Corvallis, OR. She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard 25 years ago and sister, Sue, who passed 2 ½ years ago. Her sister Sally still lives in Portland. Sylvia married Richard Smith in 1953 and was the loving mother of her surviving children (Leonard, Jay, Jodee and David), grandchildren (Carly, Jacob, and Hannah, Jill, Rob and Ben), and great-grandchildren (Timber, Lilly, Trinity, Zeke, Jackson and Ronan).
The family lived in many places – Seattle, WA, in the 1950’s; Albany, OR in the 1960’s; and then in Lake Oswego, OR – each place having its own unique set of friends and family. Sylvia loved family and friends. Everyone enjoyed her cheerful personality and inclusive persona … from Pinochle dinner clubs, to League of Women Voters, to many high school reunions, and visits of grandkids, great grandkids, nieces, nephews, sisters, etc. Those who knew her would always seem to share fond moments of interacting with her.
She stayed healthy and active right up until her passing - tending her garden daily, swimming in the summer, driving herself around, and much more. She loved watching Blazers and Timbers games, and was in the process of re-watching her favorite movies like O Brother, Where Art Thou?, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, and The Fugitive.
She has lived in her Lake Oswego house since 1969 and was able to stay with her grandson Jacob, as her companion and caregiver for the last few years in spite of failing health.
She was an active member in the League of Women Voters where she had a passion for water quality issues. Donations may be directed to the League of Women Voters in lieu of flowers. Link is below.
Sylvia will be laid to rest with her husband, Richard at Willamette National Cemetery in a private interment.
