Shirley was born in North Battleford, Saskatchewan, Canada, to Thomas and Annie Newell. She was their fourth child. She moved to the United States with her mother in March, 1938, and became a US citizen. Shirley married Lawrence Larson on December 17th, 1949, and they were married for just over 55 years before he passed away. She lived most of her life in Oregon. For over 50 years they lived on Sauvie Island.
Shirley was a member of the Sauvie Island Grange for over 50 years, was a member of the Sauvie Island Knitters Group, she belonged to the Sons of Norway, and was a long time member of the Good Timers Bowling League. She was a volunteer for years at the SAT office on Sauvie Island, which is run by the Multnomah County sheriff’s office. She worked for many years at Tektronix in Beaverton in the ceramics building.
Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence, and sons Thomas and David. She is survived by her daughter, Karla and husband, Marty Trtek, of Scappoose, Oregon, Norwegian son, Kjetil Agnar Rivelsrud, of Oslo, Norway, Grandchildren, Jonathan (Brook) Trtek, Jeremy (Kristina) Trtek, Jarrett Trtek, Kevin (Megan) Larson, Jana (Mychal) Dynes, Tiffany (Matthew) Larson/Welters, and 8 great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 21st, at 2:00pm at Skyline Memorial Gardens. Viewing will be before the service from 1:00pm to 1:45pm. Donations may be made to the Sauvie Island Grange Scholarship program or Legacy Hospice of Portland.
