Ain't no time to hate, barely time to wait
Whoa, oh, what I want to know, where does the time go?
Scott McCall, 68, a longtime resident of Portland, Oregon, died suddenly on October 9th, 2024, after a tough 18 months spent recovering from life-changing strokes. He was a beloved husband, father, son, brother, and friend, whose memory will live on in those he leaves behind.
Scott was born on November 3rd, 1955, in Edina, Minnesota, the first of Elaine and Hack McCall’s two children. As he was growing up, he competed passionately in multiple sports, including wrestling, hockey and baseball and developed his love of biking and camping. After attending Edina High School, he became a proud Badger and graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Throughout his life, Scott enjoyed being a spectator and fan of many sports and remained loyal long-term to his chosen teams (his fav: the Twins).
After college, he translated his love of sports and competition to sales, where his striving for excellence and outgoing personality made him a valued member of winning sales teams. Scott achieved top sales status and awards wherever he worked. Beyond his stellar numbers, he was known for his unusually long and successful tenures and his willingness to share what he learned and help others reach their goals.
A lifelong outdoorsman, he was proud of the many wilderness trips he completed as a young man, including solo camping in the Minnesota winter and backpacking and canoeing in the Minnesota Boundary Waters - which is also where he and Debra took their first camping trip together and fell in love. Scott was also a lifelong cyclist who was less enthralled by speed than by the simple freedom of riding, whether road cycling around the city or competing in cyclocross.
When indoors, he explored and enjoyed many different genres of music, compiling a colossal collection of CDs and vinyl, from Aretha Franklin to ZZ Top. With his diverse ear, Scott was delighted when his children learned to play instruments and felt great joy hearing Kyle play guitar in jazz band and Alexander play violin in orchestra. Scott truly loved to share a good time. His guests will never forget his fine cooking, the wine he’d pair with it or the stories he’d tell. Over the years, he and Debra “grooved” at many live music performances, the best times being hearing their children play, and before that - the Grateful Dead (quoted at top).
Scott is survived by his spouse of 43 years, Debra; son Kyle and his wife Megan; son Alexander; mother, Elaine and her husband (Scott’s stepdad) Tom; sister, Peggy, her husband Gordy, and their family; and stepsiblings Laurie, Bill, and their families.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at a later date. Memorial donations can be made to World Bicycle Relief: https://www.powerofbicycles.org/donate-usd.
