Maxine passed peacefully May 22, 2013 at the age of 89. Her last days filled with the love and care of her family and caregivers, especially that of her pride and joy – her four daughters and their families.
Maxine was born July 17, 1923 in Newport, Oregon to August and Hilda Blattner. She attended Taft high school and moved to Portland where she met, and married, Robert Schaffer on Sept. 14, 1946. Robert predeceased her in 2002. Maxine worked as an underwriter at Oregon Blue Cross/Blue Shield where she retired. Her passions included visiting the Oregon coast, cooking, canning, gardening, and sewing – and she loved to entertain. She loved politics and was an active part of both Kennedy campaigns in Eugene, meeting both. She also worked on Senator Wayne Morse’s campaign.
Very Spiritual, Maxine attended The First Presbyterian Church in Portland and later became a member of the Beaverton Four Square Church.
Maxine is survived by her two sisters, Dorothy Blattner of Portland, OR and Pauline White of St. Joseph, MO; daughters and son-in-laws, Jan and Bill Morris, Patty and Ron Church, Debbie and Pat O’Malley and Linda Schaffer, all of the Portland area.
Above all, Maxine’s true calling in life was mother to her daughters; proud and loving grandmother to Amy and Brad Church, Tammy Benedict, Lindsey Abramo, Jennie Peterson and Lauren Beckley; and great grandmother to Avery Benedict and Wesley Abramo. Her extended family included her “boys”, sons-in-laws Bill Morris, Ron Church, and Pat O’Malley.
Maxine, as in life, was blessed with grace and peace as she passed – kind and loving to all those around her. She leaves a legacy of unconditional love, kindness, and respect and will be remembered by all she touched. The family would like to thank the caregivers at Beaverton Farmington Square for their loving care.
Mom, you will be deeply missed and never forgotten.
A memorial service and celebration of Maxine’s life will be held at Skyline Memorial Gardens, 4101 NW Skyline Blvd. Portland, Or 97229, on Friday, June 21, 2013 at 1 pm.
Remembrances to Maxine may be donated to The Alzheimer’s Association or Odyssey Hospice.
