Mary was born the eldest of 5 children on May 22, 1921 in Macon, Georgia to parents Henry Carlton North Sr. and Linnon Johnson North. She spent her childhood in Brunswick and St. Simons Island, a true “southern belle.” Mary graduated from Glynn Academy and later attended Georgia State Women’s College; her college studies were interrupted by World War II. She helped with the war effort by working for the Hercules Powder Company and met her future husband, Marshall Foreman Dunn, a naval officer stationed at St. Simons. She married and moved to Portland, Oregon and raised her 3 children there.
Mary explored her historical roots and was admitted to the Daughters of the American Revolution. These child-rearing years were blessed with frequent gatherings, especially holidays with family and friends filled with laughter, music and stories. Mary’s journeys to the Georgia Sea Islands continued the tradition of cherished reunions with her extended family—a value she imparted to all her loved ones.
Mary died on August 10, 2013 at age 92 from a stroke. She was preceded in death by her brother, Henry Carlton North Jr. (Sonny). She is survived by her children Lynda Cogdall, Pat Dunn and Beth Hagestedt; her siblings Carolyn Scott, Jim North and Greer North; her grandchildren Kelly Bizieff, Matt Abelsen, Kara Stone and Erik Hagestedt; and her great grandchildren Conner, Jake, Carly, Joey, Kiley, Madeline and Mia.
Mary’s life will be celebrated privately by family and friends.
