Lillian Jeanette Cox-Hendricks was born in Phoebus, Virginia on August 9, 1927 to John Theodore and Mary Madeline Hedgepeth. Lillian had an older brother John and younger sister Gina. As a teen she sang and danced with the U.S.O. After high school she took some courses at James Madison University and studied nursing at Norfolk General Hospital School of Nursing in Virginia and The Margaret Hague Maternity Hospital in New Jersey.
After nursing school Lillian moved to California, married Charles Bernhardt and had three children, Joe, Carl, and Mary.
Lillian spent most of her 40 + years in nursing working as a labor and delivery nurse. Bringing new life into this world gave her great joy and it was a job she truly loved. Lillian was committed to her faith and her church, singing in the choir, assisting in the kitchen serving meals, teaching Sunday School, and helping in any way needed.
In 1980 Lillian married Calvin Cox and together they enjoyed traveling, family, their property in the Angeles Forest, and serving in their church. After Calvin passed away Lillian moved up to Oregon to be near her daughter, son-in-law and grandchildren. She continued her service to others through The Salvation Army and Yamhill County Sheriff’s Office.
In 2002 Lillian moved back to California and married Joseph Monroe Hendricks. Lillian continued to be involved in church, family, and service to others. Lillian eventually returned to Oregon to be near her ever growing family of great grandchildren.
Lillian passed away on June 2, 2017 and is survived by her children, Carl Bernhardt, son and Mary and Ray Wikle, daughter and son-in-law, and her blended family including Ginger and Vergle Hicks, Calvena Mendoza, Steve and Patty Hendricks, Braddford and Debbie Hendricks, Cynthia and Ken Buchan, and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Throughout Lillian’s long life she loved God, her family and serving others. We know as she walked into Heaven she heard her Heavenly Father say “well done, good and faithful servant.”
