June Tyler Rogers passed away at her home in Lake Oswego, Oregon, on March 1, 2021, age 100 years. She was born in Springfield, Oregon to Beulah (Hill) and Samuel Henry Tyler on April 28, 1920, the year women were granted the right to vote. June graduated from Eugene High School in 1938, then earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from University of Oregon in 1942. After college, working with the Red Cross, she supported troops returning from World War II. June married Robert Ross Rogers (preceded in death) on January 20,1946 in Eugene. The couple settled in Oakridge. After a brief stint in St. Louis, Missouri, they moved to Portland in 1961.
June’s grandparents immigrated to Oregon in the early 20th century. In 1902 her paternal grandparents moved with their eleven children from a farm in Homer, Nebraska to a homestead near Heppner. In 1908 her maternal grandparents moved with their eight children from a cotton farm in Texas to Salem. Upon returning from World War I in 1918, her father nursed her mother through the pandemic.
Devoted to groups that fostered the development of her children, June was active in the PTA, Girl Scouts and the family’s church, among other groups. In later years, Urban Tours’ focus on the architecture of downtown Portland for 4th graders filled her heart. Throughout, she was active in PEO, which raises funds for a fine women’s college in Missouri.
Ever filled with enthusiasms, June loved travel, hiking, golf and bird watching with Bob, and sharing books and classical music. She was amazingly adept at nurturing bonsai plants. Above all she was proud of her four daughters and thrived on seeing her grandchildren and great grandchildren grow and engage with the world. June blessed us with her laughter, her careful listening, the deep value she gave to friendship, her loyalty to those she loved, her openness to evolve as the world changed, and her resiliency and courage in the face of health challenges.
June is survived by her daughters Carol Rogers Stampfer (Noam deceased), Laura Louise Rogers (S. Thomas Alexander) and Janet Rogers Williams (David) of Portland and by Martha Ellen Rogers of Boston, Massachusetts; by grandchildren Aviva Bracha Stampfer, Beth Eisler Williams, Rahel Ora Stampfer, Todd Tyler Williams and Zev Jacob Rogers Stampfer; and by six great grandchildren – plus one on the way.
A Celebration of June’s life will be held via Zoom Monday, April 12 at 1:00 pm PT. If you wish to attend, contact Cedar Hills United Church of Christ via [email protected] or call 503.644.3838.
