Johnny grew up on a large farm and did a lot of hard work from a very young age. They raised livestock and grew oats, soybeans, and corn. He graduated from Harlan High School.
Johnny married Marilyn Adams in 1948. The two met when they were both country school students. The two were blessed with a son Randy in 1951.
They remained in Iowa until 1974 upon which time they relocated to Oregon where they settled in Hillsboro. The farm in Iowa was later sold. Johnny went to work for the Hillsboro school district as a maintenance man and Marilyn worked for the school district as well. After five years working for the school district, Johnny started his own all-around handyman business which he operated until his retirement at age 65.
Following retirement, Johnny and Marilyn enjoyed many motorhome excursions together. The two returned to Harlan to reconnect with family and friends visited many special destinations including Alaska and Nevada. The two gave up motorhoming in 2007 and Johnny kept busy tinkering around the house and working on various projects.
Johnny will be remembered as a man who loved his family and he was a wonderful, encouraging spirit. It has been said that he loved to be around other people. He had no problem striking up a conversation with someone he had never met before and he enjoyed open discussions with anyone. His favorite pastime was going to garage sales and discovering special treasures.
Johnny is predeceased by his parents Gale and Martha Grabill; and his brother Donald.
He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Marilyn; son, Randy (Jo) of Hillsboro; brother, Charles (Twyla) of Harlan, Iowa; sister, Ladonna Noble (Jack) of Orlando, Florida; and sister-in-law Bonnie Grabill, and his loving, loyal doggie companion, Rudy.
Johnny was a loving son, brother, husband, father, and friend and he will be missed by those who knew him.
