John "Jack" Stewart White was born December 7th, 1934 in the Portland Sanitarium in Portland, Oregon. From a very early age John was referred to as Jack. He was the youngest of four children born to Paul and Beulah White. His older brothers Jim and Al and sister Laura Jean grew up together in many homes throughout the Portland area.
Jack attended Portland Union Academy and Elementary School. He was baptized in the Portland Central Seventh-day Adventist Church on December 1, 1945 and loved to share his beliefs with others. Jack married his high school sweetheart Nana Howell on March 19, 1953 and had three children, Douglas John, Melinda Sue and Carol Ann.
After spending many years starting in early high school working in his dad’s sign shop, Jack moved his family in the late 50’s to a chicken farm he purchased in Iowa. It took three years to figure out farming wasn’t for him, so he moved his family back to the Portland area where he started his successful career as a chemical salesman. In 1965, Mt. Hood Chemical expanded and transferred Jack and his family to its new location in Seattle. There, Jack and Nana became quite involved in the Kirkland SDA church and were leaders in the Bel-Kirk Pathfinders. Jack and his family moved back to the Portland area in 1969, eventually buying 5 acres in Sandy, Oregon to give farming another chance.
Along with fancy and fast cars, Jack loved big motor homes. In the years before retirement, Jack and Nana traveled around the northwest in their motor home selling chemicals and setting up car washes, laundries, and housekeeping in motels. Jack and Nana retired in 1999.
Jack’s high school sweetheart and loving, caring, and tireless companion died in 2000. Jack quickly discovered he could not survive alone and married a mutual friend they got to know living in the Rancho Casa Blanca retirement community in Indio. Because Doreen was Canadian they spent their time traveling in their motor home between Kelowna B.C. and Indio, California.
A year ago, Jack moved to Anacortes, Washington to live close to his son and his wife, Sandy. After several falls and trips to the hospital, Jack fell and broke his hip. This necessitated a surgery from which he never recovered and from which he passed to his eternal rest on April 28, 2023. We are grateful for the wonderful life Jack shared with his children, 8 grandchildren, and 9 great grandchildren. May he rest in peace beside his beautiful wife, Nana, until Jesus comes.
A graveside service for Jack will be held Saturday, May 20, 2023 at 2:00 PM at Sunset Hills Memorial Park, 6801 SW Sunset Hwy, Portland, OR 97225.
Following the graveside service will be a memorial service at 3:00 PM at Finley-Sunset Hills Mortuary, 6801 SW Sunset Hwy, Portland, OR 97225 in the Great Hall.
