Her parents divorced when she was about 8 years old, and shifted around between Grandparents and an Aunt. At Junior High age, she settled with her mother and attended her first year of high school in Clear Lake, Iowa.
Her Mother, Naoma, married Phil Sheimo, and gave Joan a younger sister, Paula. Joan finished high school at Fertile High in Fertile, Iowa, graduating in 1939. She was awarded ‘Rose Festival Queen’ in her Senior Year & rode in the parade. Upon graduating, Joan went to Minneapolis General Hospital for x-ray technician training.
During a Christmas vacation at her older sisters, she attended an evangelistic church meeting and came to know Jesus Christ as Savior.
Joan attended Northwestern Bible College in Minneapolis for 3 years in Christian Education and graduated in 1946. Afterwards, she served in a church in Rochester, Minnesota for several years where she met her husband, Milton Schultz. They were married in 1951 and moved to Portland, Oregon for work and to raise their family.
Joan was a homemaker, active at Cedar Mill Bible Church in outreach with new mothers and visitors, & then later Village Baptist Church. She was very involved & volunteered in the political arena, was a long time member & recruiter for Concerned Women for America, as well as other organizations.
Joan’s husband, Milton, passed away in 1990. She remained in Portland until 1998 when she moved to Seattle to live at Crista Senior Living.
Joan is survived by her three children: Virginia Schultz (Portland, Oregon), Jim Schultz & wife Pam (Henderson, Nevada), Alyssa Petrie and husband George (Seattle, Washington); six grandchildren: Siraya Schultz, Cyle Schultz, Colin Schultz, Jessica Petrie, Nicole Petrie, & Taylor Petrie; and one sister, Paula Worsley and husband Dick (Fertile, Iowa).
A Celebration of life service will take place at Skyline Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home, 4101 NW Skyline Blvd., Portland, Oregon, on Sunday, November 13th, 2016 at noon.Celebration of Life Service at Skyline Memorial Gardens Chapel. A graveside committal service will take place in Skyline Memorial Gardens immediately following the chapel ceremony.
