James M. Dixon was born October 17, 1924 in Salem, Missouri and passed away July 13, 2021 in Eagle Creek, Oregon. After service as an Army pilot in WWII, he moved to Portland, Oregon where he met and married his beloved wife Lois Fancher. They were married for 57 years.
James and Lois raised two sons as a military family, moving all over the country in their Airstream trailer for his many military assignments. One of the highlights of James’ Air Force travels brought the entire family to Brazil for a year in 1958. James was recalled to active duty during the Korean War and remained on active duty with the USAF. He served as a commander of a helicopter rescue squadron, known as the Jolly Green Giants, in Udorn, Thailand during the Vietnam War. He retired from the USAF in April 1970 in the grade of Lt. Colonel. Following his military career, he then served for 15 years as a dispatcher for the Multnomah County/City of Portland Emergency Communications Center.
In his retirement, he was part of the Oregon Council of Federally-Related Organizations (OCFRO), a team of federal and PERS retirees, that fought and won a large lawsuit against the state of Oregon. He published and edited the federal retiree newsletter (The OCFRO Bulletin) until Lois was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease in 1994. Following this, he faithfully cared for her until she passed away in 2005. After her passing, he took great pride in maintaining his property independently until his 90’s. He also enjoyed learning about Geology, taking drives around Oregon and getting together with his many friends.
He is survived by: his two sons, Steven (Photographer) and James R. (Artist). He is also survived by: his two granddaughters, Charity (City Council member for Estacada) and Taylor (hospital-based Speech Language Pathologist), and two other grandchildren, as well as three great grandchildren, Noah, Esther and Clara. He lived a full long life and will be dearly missed. Kindly make remembrances to the Oregon Veteran’s Home in the Dalles.
A graveside service will be held on Friday, September 3rd at 1300 at Willamette National Cemetery, 11800 SE Mt Scott Blvd, Portland, OR 97086. Those that wish may gather at Lincoln Memorial Park and Funeral Home, 11801 SE Mt Scott Blvd, Portland, OR 97086 at 1230 and drive in procession to Willamette National Cemetery, where the graveside service will begin promptly at 1300.
