Jack Horace Hunt was born in Bandon, Oregon on July 24, 1918. His parents were Horace Harry Hyde Hunt and Lenora Belle James Hunt. Both parents were from Oregon pioneering families. His Father owned a shingle mill. Jack had a brother, Andrew Joseph Hunt , born in 1921 who died at age 3 from pneumonia. He had a sister, Alene Anna Hunt Thomas Fishman,. born in 1929. He lived in Bandon until 1926, when the mill burned down. The family then moved to Coquille, where they continued in the logging business.
After graduating from Coquille High School, Jack went to Oregon State University where he majored in forestry. World War II interrupted his education. Jack became an Army Captain and served in the European front lines .
After the war, Jack returned home to marry Marguerite Phyllis Ammeter, whom he had met at Oregon State. They were married on December 7, 1945. Jack graduated from OSU in 1946.
Jack, Marguerite and Jack's parents owned and operated a sawmill in Coos County from 1946 to1956. Carol Anne was born in 1946. Christian John was born in 1950.
In 1956, the family moved to Portland. Jack worked in the lumber retail business. He got an M. A. in Geography from Oregon State in 1962.
Jack worked for the Bureau of Indian Affairs from 1962 to his retirement in 1986. He worked at the Warm Springs Indian Reservation for four years, and then in the Portland Office. He was the director of natural resources.
His son, Chris, died in 1973. Marguerite died in 1974. He married Alice Woodward Rohler in 1975. At that time he acquired two new daughters, Susan Pape, and Mary Ann Martell. Alice died on September 8, 1999.
Jack had many hobbies and interests. He was a pilot. He built a house, his own boat, and an ultralight airplane. He and Alice traveled internationally each year. They traveled to each continent. They enjoyed Elder Hostel. He enjoyed reading, and was constantly curious about new things. He loved being with his family, and appreciated each of them. After Alice’s death he took his daughters and their husbands on many wonderful trips. His motto was "Keep On Keepin' On" even after his health started failing.
Jack leaves behind his daughters and husbands, Carol and Charles Johnson, Mary Ann and Raymond Martell, Susan and Jeffery Pape. Grandchildren: Andrew Johnson, Helen Johnson, Rebecca Martell, Raymond and Heather Martell, and Heather Gee-Pape. Great grandchild Skyler Martell and best friends Sam and Sharon Bevan.
