Carolyn Marie Pritchard

Carolyn M (Friedel) Pritchard, a longtime resident of Portland, died on May 3rd 2024, at age 83.

She was a nationally renowned artist who painted for over 50 years. She attended Skyline grade school, graduated from Cleveland High School and studied for 2 years at Lewis and Clark College in Portland, Oregon, where she developed a passion for decorative painting in acrylic, oil and watercolor. She learned from and taught with many well-known painters across the country, and also taught at Portland Community College, several specialty shops, national conferences, and as a guest instructor in Alaska and other states. Carol contributed to several artistic organizations, such as The Society of Decorative Painters, where she helped start the local chapter and served in various board roles as a 40 year member. She was a longtime member of the Raindrop Chapter of Folk Art. Additionally, she earned her Interior Design Degree, was an active member of the Heritage Club, and for many years enjoyed turning clients dreams to reality.

Her art has been featured at The Pittock Mansion (3 times), The American History Museum of the Smithsonian (4 times), The Blair House (2 times), the Vice President’s home, and the White House (3 times). She also had the unique privilege of painting and giving a special gift to George and Barbara Bush in 1997. Carol and her husband William lived in Portland for more than 80 years and were longtime members of the Multnomah Athletic Club, as well as the First Congregational Church. She liked traveling to the U.S., Canada, United Kingdom, Europe, Iceland, Australia and New Zealand. Carol also enjoyed boating, fishing, cooking, gardening and loved her time spent at their beach house on the Oregon coast.

She was loved and will be missed by her husband of 61 years, two adult children, their spouses and three grandsons.

There will be a family only ceremony at a later date, and so they request in Lieu of flowers that her artistic passion be kept alive via Donations to the Carolyn M. Pritchard Art Scholarship at Lewis & Clark College.
