William was born in Portland on September 24, 1929, the first son of the late William F. Sr. and Violet (Drown) Stanhope.
William attended local schools and proudly served his country in the Army, Navy and Air Force. William worked for A&P until their closing, and later retired from Nissen Bakery in 1994 after working more than 25 years.
He married Gloria A Martorano on July 14, 1951. They traveled together while he was in the service. After leaving the service they returned to Maine to start a family having two daughters, Karen Stanhope Brown and Terri Stanhope Gould.
William enjoyed spending time at home. A true" Jack of all trades", William enjoyed working on his home and doing carpentry. He was a member of the V.F.W. and longtime communicant of St. Pius X R.C. Church.
He was predeceased by his wife, Gloria on July 4, 2004 after 52 years of marriage, four brothers, Edward, Laurence, Raymond, and Robert, four sisters, Lorraine Stanhope, Marion Coffin, Maureen Merrethew, and Jean O'Dell.
Surviving are his daughters Karen Brown and her husband Dennis of Portland,
Terri Gould and her husband Gregory of Portland, three grandchildren, Alexander Brown, and Adam Amanda Gould, his sister, Patricia Sweatt of Windham, and a brother, James Stanhope of Standish.
A period of visitation for William will be held this Thursday, August 22nd from
4 to 6 PM at the Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St. Portland. A 10:00 AM Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated for William on Friday the 23rd at St. Pius X R.C. Church, 492 Ocean Ave. Portland. Committal services will follow at Calvary Cemetery in South Portland.

Care for William and his family has been entrusted to the Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home of Portland.
