Falmouth, ME- William F. Lovett “Bill”, 83, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on December 1, 2024. Bill, or Billy, to those who knew him since his teenage years, was born on Nov. 3, 1941, in Portland, Maine. He attended North Yarmouth Academy and later attended Dean Junior College. Bill served his country as a US Marine from 1963-1969. He co-owned and operated Hatcher’s Motel & Steakhouse in Naples from 1968-1973. Bill was later a boatyard technician at Handy Boat in Falmouth from 1972-1976, and again from 1986-1993. Growing up on the ocean in Falmouth Foreside, Bill learned to love the water at an early age. Many weekends and summers were spent with family on their boat Alouette. He, his father and brother, Tom, built a boathouse which is still standing and can be seen from the pier at Town Landing; just look north about 100 yards. He also loved music, so when he landed a job later in life as an usher for the Portland Symphony Orchestra, he was thrilled. For years he was a choir singer at Cumberland Congregational Church, and he was also one of their Deacons. A family man, Bill instilled good family values to his daughters and granddaughters.
Throughout his life he demonstrated a commitment to volunteering in his community. He was active in the Falmouth Fire Department, he spent Saturdays umpiring little league baseball games, he worked at Maine Medical Center and at various road races. He himself was a runner. Bill was also a regular blood donor.
Most recently, Bill worked for the City of Portland providing security for various events. He loved this job as long as the concerts didn't keep him out too late! In addition to being a Marine, Bill proudly served in the Army National Guard and retired after completing 21 years, making his family very proud.
Bill will be remembered for his love of the outdoors, the ocean, animals, traveling with family, volunteering, his love of baseball, and for the New York Giants...who no matter how many times they lost he always rooted for them. "Root for the underdog!" he'd say. He used to love taking long walks with his beloved white greyhound named Snowflake and having family visit him at his house.
Bill was preceded in death by parents George Lovett and Helen Thomas Lovett, and brother Tom Lovett.
He is survived by daughters Dani Fleury and husband Pascal of Florida, and Megan Lovett and husband Paul Diou of Falmouth, and granddaughters Ivy and Vivian who lovingly called him Grapy.
A service celebrating Bill‘s life will be held at 11:00 am on January 25th 2025, at Mountainside Community Church, located at 18 Mountain Rd. in Falmouth. The service will be streamed live for those unable to attend. Please visit www.jonesrichandbarnes.com to sign Bill’s online guest book.
