Paulene was born on February 24, 1924, in South Portland to Wilfred and Olive Eugley. She graduated from South Portland High School in 1941. She was accepted to enroll in nursing school but was unable to attend because, at that time, married women were disqualified from the nursing program. Paulene married Frederic Rand on her eighteenth birthday before he departed for the South Pacific naval theater in WW II. She was a member of the Deering Center Community Church, formerly the Central Square Baptist Church. She was a president of a sorority. She worked as a switch board operator at the Portland YWCA and at Sears. Her family was always her priority in life. Paulene was always available with a caring and listening ear. She had many interests, which included: knitting, crossword puzzles, and motorcycle-riding with Fred. She was known for her beautiful handwriting and her talented poetry and artistic paintings. Paulene was also known to be a prankster with a great sense of humor.
Paulene was predeceased by Fred, her loving husband of 68 years. She is survived by her four children and their spouses: Frederic and Suzanne Rand, Michael and Beth Rand, Nancy and Jeffrey Towne, and Sharon and Steven Smalley; and eight grandchildren and their spouses: Rick and Katy Rand, Sean and Jamie Crawford, Melissa Rand, Jeni and Christopher Czekala, Cam and Ashley Rand, Kristina and Eric Theriault, Samuel and Jenna Smalley, and Victoria Smalley and Daniel Gribbin; and, fourteen great-grandchildren.
