He was born Aug. 9, 1927, the son of John W. and Anna (Andersen) Jones, and Lloyd enjoyed sharing fond memories of his adventures growing up in East Deering. He attended the Cummings School, the Presumpscot School, and graduated from Portland High School on June 19, 1947.
Lloyd married the love of his life, Beverly Lorraine Wood, on Oct. 29, 1955, at St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Portland, and not long after their marriage purchased Beverly's family home on Long Island where together they spent their life raising their two children, Julie and Kris.
While still in high school, Lloyd joined the Maine State Guard on June 14, 1943, at the age of 16. He was honorably discharged from the Guard to enter the U.S. Navy on April 26, 1945, and again was honorably discharged as Seaman First Class on Aug. 28, 1946.
After his Naval service, Lloyd attended the Maine Vocational-Technical Institute in Augusta, receiving his diploma in 1950. Lloyd also attended Tri-State University in Angola, Ind.
Lloyd returned to serve his country when he entered the Air Force on Oct. 24, 1950, at Fort Williams in Cape Elizabeth. He served as an Airman First Class and Senior Lineman, and was honorably discharged from the Air Force on June 9, 1954.
Lloyd was a lifelong learner, continuing his education after leaving the Air Force, and ultimately earned his license as a Maine professional land surveyor. Lloyd began working as an engineering aide with the City of Portland in 1957, and worked in the City's Engineering and Public Works Departments as a surveyor, chief of party, retiring from the City after 31 and a half years in 1988. Never one to remain idle, Lloyd continued his private surveying business right up until the last year of his life.
Lloyd loved the game of tennis, and played as often as he could, both at the Tennis Racket in Portland during the winter, and on the island, patiently awaiting the arrival of his doubles partner, Norm French, every spring.
He loved spending time making improvements to his and Beverly's island home, and particularly took pride in the many landscaping improvements in his ever-growing yard, including his stone walls, the boardwalk, his windmills, and the many bird houses, signs and other wood crafts he shared with family and friends.
Lloyd is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Beverly (Wood) Jones; daughter, Julie Jones Neily and husband William, of Gorham; son, Kris Jones and wife Jovan, of Long Island; sister, Barbara Jones Denmat of Guntersville, Ala.; brother, John (Alice Mae) of Jasper, Ga.; grandsons, Kristopher (Maria) and Tristan (Megan); great-grandchildren, Travis Lloyd and Paige Elizabeth, all of Gorham; and special niece, Eve Sweatman, of Grant, Ala.
Lloyd was predeceased by his parents; niece, Jennifer Ann Jones; and by his cherished granddaughter, Darlene Lorraine Jones, his very own guardian angel.
The family owes a debt of gratitude to the Long Island community, with special thanks to Doris, Cinny, Pam and Sharon for their unwavering support. Also, the family would like to thank the staff at Hospice of Southern Maine. The wonderful and compassionate care provided by Anne, Marie, Louise and Kiren allowed Lloyd to live out his days where he most wanted to be, at home with his family. The family would also like to recognize the Long Island Fire and Rescue team for their compassion during this challenging time.
A celebration of Lloyd's life will be held at the Long Island VFW on Sunday, Oct. 16, 2016, at 11:30 a.m. Interment will be in the spring on Long Island.
