Helen M. Lawrence, 87, of South Portland Maine, died Saturday September 29, 2012 seven short months after losing her husband of 65 years. The daughter of Carl and Georgia Morgan, she was born in South Portland on August 7, 1925 and attended local schools. Before starting a family Helen worked at Union Mutual Life Insurance Company, once her children were grown she went to work at Arthur Hahn Company and Frank Lawrence Gas Contracting Inc. She greatly enjoyed the days she spent on Sebago Lake from her early childhood though this last summer. Each generation has many fond memories of time spent at her camp. Helen was a very talented homemaker. She was an accomplished knitter, seamstress, cook and gardener. Her love of gardening took her and her children on many road trips in search of her next discovery. Her sweaters that she designed are treasured by her children. Her chocolate chip cookies are still requested to this day. Always known for her generosity to others she donated to many charities especially animal welfare. Helen was a member of VFW Post 680 Ladies Auxiliary in Lexington, Kentucky. Helen will be greatly missed by all.
Helen was predeceased by her husband Frank P. Lawrence, infant daughter Nancy and son Gary M. Lawrence.
She is survived by her daughter Debra Moore and her husband Craig of Saco , a son Dana Lawrence and his wife Debbie of Portland, and a daughter Julie Curry and husband Scott of Sadieville, Kentucky. She is also survived by seven grandchildren, six great grand children and one great -great grandchild. In addition she is survived by her sister Jean Morgan of Raleigh, N.C. and a sister Carleen Fuller and her husband Reginald of New Smyrna Beach Florida, along with several nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank Beacon Hospice, Hospice of Southern Maine and the staff at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House for their kind care of our mom.
