Grace P. Lewis

She was one of eleven children born to Homer and Irene Campbell. All were born in their Ozark farmhouse in Koshkonong, MO. Grace, born July 8, 1924, was the fifth child and the longest survivor.

Grace left her beloved farm and family her senior year of school to work in Kansas City, MO. It was there that she met her husband, Fraser E. Lewis, Jr., from Portland, ME. He was with the Army Air Force and attending aircraft repair school. They married in Delaware on June 7, 1944. Fraser passed away in Sept., 1995 at Mercy Hospital.

Grace excelled at every job she had, whether it was working for the government grinding crystals to different frequencies for transistors or as a sales clerk for Owen Moore Department Store in downtown Portland. She was honored for being one of the friendliest, most helpful sales clerks on Congress Street. Although she proudly considered herself a “hillbilly” from the Ozarks, she was known for her beauty and graciousness. She was chosen to be an Owen Moore model for advertising in the Portland paper.

Grace will best be remembered for her contentment. She was a role model for all of her family, friends and care givers. Her sense of humor and stories of the farm entertained all who knew her.

Grace is survived by her daughter Barbara McCalmon and husband Irv of South Portland, her son Charles Lewis and long time companion, Dr. Rose Manduca, Pembroke Pines, FL., her son Scott Lewis and friend Kris Evans, Conyers, GA., five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

May 2011 until July 2012 and the Barron Center staff on 2 North for all their tender care for Grace these past two years.

A celebration of Grace’s life and a reception will be held at Galilee Baptist Church 317 Main Street, Gorham on Thursday May 23 at 6:30PM. Arrangements are under the care of Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St. Portland.
