Glenn was born October 9, 1935 in Rumford, ME to Roy and Gertrude (Sweetsir) Foster. He graduated from South Portland High School in 1954 and soon joined the U.S. Navy sailing the Caribbean and Mediterranean seas and learning the electrical trade.
He was a member of the Down East Ski Club. It was at one of the club’s monthly meetings where Jane Stephens first caught his eye. They married at the First Congregational Church in South Portland, ME on March 26, 1960 and began their adventures spending summers on Long Lake, skiing at Pleasant Mountain in the winter, and building their home in South Portland where they raised their three daughters and hosted memorable holidays, parties and celebrations. In 2000, Glenn and Jane began dividing their time between Maine and The Villages in Florida. They loved the community of friends they made in Florida, the sunny weather, golfing, and many other activities. They enjoyed traveling and went on several cruises with family and friends, even road-tripping across the country.
Always curious, Glenn often had a question to ask and always listened thoughtfully to the answer provided. He had a zest for life and was known for his beach water ski starts, or “swishing” adeptly on the ski slopes while yodeling and shouting “K’out!” to friends on the chairlift overhead. Later in life, he turned his curiosity to compiling his family genealogy and being contented to sit quietly in a sunny spot with his thoughts. Glenn will be remembered for his quick wit, kind spirit, and competitive game of cribbage that he played right up to the age of 88.
Glenn excelled at and loved his work. He was a journeyman electrician, member of the IBEW, Hiram Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite, Valley of Portland, and the Kora Shriners. He worked most of his career at E. S. Boulos. He generously offered his expertise to family and friends in need of electrical help and it was not uncommon to find someone’s television that was “on the fritz” on his work bench.
Glenn is survived by his wife Jane and their daughters: Stacy Tate (William Jr.) of McKinney, TX, LyndaLee Landry (Randall) of Scarborough, ME, and Keri Foster (Daniel Stoops) of Portland, OR. He leaves behind four beloved grandchildren: Emily Falk (Ryan), William Tate, III (Alyson), Tucker Landry, Braden Landry and three great grandchildren. He is also survived by sisters: Jane Barclay of Dothan, AL and Karen Foster (Phil Caper) of Portland, ME, and several nieces and nephews.
Glenn’s family is grateful for the caring staff at the Maine Veterans’ Home.
