Freeport- Eleanor S. Miller died on June 6, 2014, at the Hawthorne House in Freeport. She was born in Portland on August 1, 1916, a daughter of George F. Sturgis and Margaret Hudson Sturgis. She was educated in Portland schools, graduating from Portland High School in 1934
Eleanor married Neil Miller in 1938, on her birthday. They had been married 49 years when he died in 1987. Together they raised four daughters, Anita (Mrs. Richard) Boutet of Saco, Nancy (Mrs. Brian) Carkhuff of Portland, Cathy Smith of Westbrook and Cindy (Mrs. Bernand) Moody of North Windham.
After she raised her family, Eleanor worked as a medical secretary for Donald Cole, M.D., retiring in 1978.
Eleanor was a life-long active member of Saint Paul’s Anglican Church. She was also a member of the Junior Burns Club. She enjoyed traveling,
dancing, bowling, and participating in the activities of her grandchildren.
She was pre-deceased by her sister, Mary Cunningham.
In addition to her daughters, she is survived by a sister Beth Johns of Portland, 11 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren, 1 great- great grandchild, and many
nieces and nephews.
The family thanks the staff at Hawthorne house who cared for Eleanor. The level of care was very personal and loving. Thank you to all who made her
journey peaceful.
She will be missed.
Visiting hours will be held from 4-7 pm on Monday, June 9, 2014, at Jones Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St. Portland. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 am on Wednesday, June 11, 2014 at St. Paul’s Anglican Church, 279 Congress St. Portland. Burial will follow at Brooklawn Memorial Park in Portland.
