Peaks Island- Edward A. Latham, Sr., died on October 6th in his home on Peaks Island surrounded by his family. He was born on December 18, 1932, the son of Edward R and Mary (Conley) Latham. In the 1940s he worked as a deckhand on Casco Bay Lines. He continued to be of service to the people ‘down the bay’ when he went to work at Casco Bay Light and Power and then CMP. He was well known by the people on all 7 Islands as the guy who kept the lights on by arriving in his boat the ‘Hallelujah’, in even the most extreme weather conditions. During hurricanes he would anchor the boat in a cove behind Diamond Island and stay aboard so he would be ready to go as soon as the storm passed.
He had been a very active member of the Island Community including running the Saturday morning boys basketball program at Peaks Island School, the weekly communion breakfast at St. Christopher’s Catholic Church, also serving one term on the parish council. He became the Boy Scout troop leader and persuaded his sister Mary and her friend Amy Brown to become Cub Scout den mothers together by telling each that the other had already agreed. He was an active member of the Lion’s Club for 35 years and was always seen at the Lobster Bakes and the annual Halloween party.
The Latham family is very grateful to the nurses from Hospice of Southern Maine, and for the many kindnesses, warm wishes and prayers from our friends.
He was pre-deceased by his parents and his two sisters, Mary Johansen and Patricia Jordan.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Theresa (Newman) Latham and his five children, Edward, Jr, of South Portland; Ellen Ivers and her husband Carl, of Pine Point; Kathryn Latham and her partner David Clough, of Yarmouth; Daniel Latham and his wife Phyllis of Yarmouth and Patricia Latham and her partner Bradford Cleaves of Portland; 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
