DORIS COBURN McAFEE
1933 - 2020
Doris Coburn McAfee passed away peacefully in her sleep at her residence on November 25, 2020. She was born on July 11, 1933, in Brownville Junction, Maine to Charles and Margaret Swan Coburn.
Doris graduated from Brownville Junction High School, and then from Maine General/Maine Medical Center Nursing School where she obtained her Registered Nurse degree. She worked in Boston at the Tuft's New England Medical Center Hospital where she met her husband Robert E. McAfee, a medical student at Tuft's University. They married on June 2, 1957, and settled in Portland.
Doris was very family-centered and attended all the activities in which her four children were involved, whether sports or music or academics. She was a member of various booster organizations from swim teams to marching band. She also supported community groups such as the Sweetser Home. She loved having her family together at camp on Forest Lake, and at the house for holidays, and at the annual lobster feed in July. Her grandchildren loved getting treat packages in college from "Grammie" that included her famous homemade Chex Mix and cookies. She also enjoyed knitting and made mittens and scarves for children, donating them to schools and clothing drives. Doris also quilted and the grandchildren all had special quilts; several children's quilts were made for fundraising auctions for local organizations.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her brothers Gerald, Duane, Bertram, and sister Gale, and brother-in-law David Newton.
Doris is survived by her husband of 63 years, Dr. Robert McAfee, her daughters, Deborah and Patricia of Windham, sons, Steven and wife Lisa of Wayland, Mass, Robert and wife Tammy of New Bern, North Carolina. She is also survived by her brother Jack of Brownville Junction, sisters-in-law Gloria Coburn and Sue Coburn of Brownville Junction, her brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Ken and wife Judy McAfee of Cumberland Center, Bruce and wife Marcia McAfee of Portland, Ann Newton of Ozona, Florida, along with many nieces and nephews.
She was a beloved Grammie to Eric and wife Lindsay, Ailsa, Bailey, Riley, Anna, Emily and husband Chris, Mary and husband Trace, and great grandchildren; Levi, Jacob, Jude and Juniper.
The family would like to give special thanks to Hospice of Southern Maine Team for their care and compassion.
In keeping with Doris's wishes, there will be no memorial service. Arrangements for her cremation are under the care and direction of Jones, Rich & Barnes Funeral Home.
