Bernard was born on January 27, 1928 in Dayton, ME to Percy and Edith (Rogers) Littlefield. He grew up in Dayton graduating from Hollis High School in 1946. Bernard joined the Army after high school and served two years in Japan; after returning home he attended Bryant College in Rhode Island for one year before being drafted for a two-year tour in Germany and then he was drafted again in 1953 where he spent two years in Korea.
Bernard met the love of his life Beverly Hammond in 1956 and they were married a year later on June 30, 1957 at the Hammond Farm in Parsonsfield. They have two children Gary Bruce of Hudson NH and Lisa Ann of Limington. They lived briefly in Dayton before moving to Portland to raise their family and have resided at the same residence for 61 years.
Bernard worked for Century Tire and St. Johnsbury Trucking before purchasing Motor Supply Company, which he later sold and then retired from Steego Auto Parts in 1993. Bernard, was a 50 plus year member of Mason's Corner Stone Lodge No. 0216 in Portland.
Bernard was predeceased by his parents, a brother Kermit Littlefield and both sisters Elaine Grantham and Natalie Morang. He is survived by his wife of 64 years Beverly and their children Gary and Lisa as well as two grandchildren.
At his request, there will be no visitation, a private burial will be held in the spring at Riverside Cemetery in Cornish, Maine.
The family is grateful for all the services provided by Hospice of Southern Maine that kept him comfortable and at home, where he wanted to be.
