Anthony C. Mancini

Falmouth - Anthony Charles Mancini, 75, of Falmouth, passed away unexpectedly on January 17, 2017, surrounded by his loving family.

The oldest son of Mary & Nicholas Mancini, he was born in Portland, ME on November 12, 1941. Tony graduated from Portland High School in 1960, where he was a three sport athlete, excelling in football, wrestling and baseball. He earned a football scholarship to the University of Rhode Island, but chose to stay local and join his father and grandfather in the sand and gravel business. Tony also joined the Air National Guard around this same time and remained in service for eight years.

In 1961, he married his high school sweetheart, Jane E. Barnes. They moved to Falmouth and started their family which would grow to include three children. In 1965, Tony and his father decided to venture off on their own and started a new business which they named Portland Sand & Gravel, Inc. A successful business man, Tony was very proud of the business he helped create and grow. He was particularly proud of the fact that materials from his business were used in the development of the Greater Portland Community. Some of the biggest jobs that Portland Sand & Gravel was a part of were the Cumberland County Civic Center (now known as Cross Insurance Arena), Franklin Towers, Auburn Terrace and Merrill’s Pier.

Tony and his wife were very active throughout their 55 years of marriage. They were very social and spent many Saturday nights dancing, dining and laughing with their friends. Their house hosted many parties and gatherings and they especially enjoyed the holidays with family and close friends. Tony was also an avid sports enthusiast. He was involved in playing/sponsoring a men’s softball team, playing into his mid-40’s. When no longer able to play, he turned to coaching and was the coach of a men’s touch football team, which won a few championships under his leadership. He was a previous member of both the Italian Heritage Center and the Elks Club.

Anthony and Jane enjoyed spending their winters in Florida, where they found many new friends and continued their social activities. Tony was also an avid golfer who was very proud to have shot two hole-in-one’s! One was shot at the Tiburon Golf Club (Naples FL) and the other at the Naples (FL) Beach & Golf Club.

Tony was a wonderful, caring man who loved his family. He was extremely proud of his children and his grandchildren’s accomplishments. He could often be heard at one of their athletic events cheering and rooting on the team, but the loudest cheers were for his grandchildren. “Papa” enjoyed going to their events and keeping up with what each grandchild was involved with in school.

Anthony is survived by his loving wife Jane; his daughter Mary Rolfe, her husband Chris and their children Brandon, Allison and Tyler; daughter Maureen Bidwell and her children Eric and Olivia; son Anthony Mancini, his wife Diana and their children Rocco and Anna; and several nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents, Mary and Nicholas Mancini, Sr.; brothers Rocco and Tommy; and his grandson, Dominic Mancini.

Relatives and friends are invited to a time of visitation from 4 to 7 PM on Monday January 23, 2017 at the Jones, Rich & Barnes Funeral Home, 199 Woodford Street. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday January 24, 2017 at 10 AM at Holy Martyr’s Catholic Church. Rt. 88, Falmouth. Interment will follow in the family lot in New Calvary Cemetery, South Portland.
