Captain Bernard (Bernie) Adelbert White, US Navy Retired joined his Heavenly Father on July 3, 2014. Born in Nashville, TN on April 12, 1932 he was the sixth of seven children of Sherman Karl White and Ursula Hailey White.
Hs is survived by, Dottie, his wife of 59 years, their five children, Bernie Jr, Marian, David, Beth and Paul, and their 13 grandchildren, Nicholas, Vanessa, Spencer, Jackie, Carolyn, Bernie III, Julia, David, Paul Daniel, Alexandra, Paul Carlton, Samantha and Derek and his sister Pat Saraz.
Upon graduation from the United States Naval Academy in 1955, he earned his Naval Aviator wings in 1956. Captain White served four tours in Vietnam (two flying A-4 Skyhawks and two on the staff of the USS America) and flew over 400 combat missions, 209 of which were over North Vietnam. After he retired from the Navy in 1979 he worked for BDM Corporation as an engineering consultant for 15 years.
During his second retirement, he enjoyed serving his community as a volunteer for Hospice, an adjutant professor at Daytona Beach Community College and substitute teacher at local high schools.
He was a devout Catholic and sang as a tenor in the choir at Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church.
A member of Spruce Creek Country Club, he served on the board of regents and was an avid golfer; the GBI (Greater Bernie Invitational) was an annual favorite.
Family, aviation and golf were among his life passions. Anyone who ever spent any time with Bernie has been touched with his kind heart, integrity and generosity; a truly great Christian, husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend to many.
Visitation will be from 6 – 8 PM on the 9th of July at Volusia Memorial Funeral Home 4815 Clyde Morris Blvd, Port Orange. There will be a funeral mass at 11 AM on Thursday, the 10th of July at Our Lady of Hope in Port Orange.
In lieu of flowers, a donation in his name to Halifax Hospice of Volusia/Flagler, if you so desire, will be greatly appreciated.
