Robert (Bob) A. Hochstein, 83, formerly from Port Lavaca passed away September 6, 2015. He was born in Randolph, NE to the late Lawrence and Cecilia Stevens Hochstein on September 2, 1932. Upon graduation from St. Frances High School, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. During Bob’s 21 years career as a radar technician, he served oversees during both the Korean and Vietnam conflicts. Bob married the love of his life, Marilyn M. Allar on June 20, 1956. During their 55 years of marriage, they lived in several states and two other countries. In 1971, they made their home in Port Lavaca when Bob was stationed at Matagorda Island. He retired as a Senior Master Sergeant in 1973. After retirement Bob worked for 2 years at ALCOA. He then had a second career as an electrician for Brown & Root. Bob finished his professional career as an electrical inspector for Testenger Engineering.
Bob was a devout Roman Catholic and, until his battle with dementia, an active member of the choir and Knights of Columbus. He loved the Knights of Columbus and spent countless hours making fish patties for fair week, delivering Christmas presents to needy kids, working Bingo, and serving as various officers, including Grand Knight. Bob was a “fix-it-man” extraordinaire. If he didn’t know how to repair something, he would tinker with it until he figured it out. He was a generous giver of his time, volunteering his electrical expertise to the church, fixing lighting, fans, and air conditioning. He was a voracious reader; it was rare to find a subject that Bob didn’t know something about. He was a hard worker and prided himself on a job well done. Bob loved the outdoors, and if he wasn’t at deer camp, he was getting ready for camp or thinking about deer camp. He shared that passion for hunting with his son, Steve. Bob also enjoyed gardening, golf, and bowling. He was a very kind man, even in his final years when his health was failing and loneliness was a constant, he maintained his grace and sense of humor. He left a lasting impact on his caregivers, who provided such loving care in his last several years.
Bob was preceded in death by his wife, Marilyn, his sisters, Gladys Borst and Marilyn LeClaire, and his brother, David Hochstein. He is survived by his children: Steve (Liz) Hochstein from Pearland, Cindy (Roland) Garza from Richmond, and Patty (Gary) Weaver from Port Lavaca; his brother, Al (Aleen) Hochstein from Tennessee; and his grandchildren: Alana, Jason, and Chris Hochstein, Robert, Taran, and Reagan Garza, and Justin, Jordan, Jared, Jenna, and Jamie Weaver.
Visitation will be held Thursday, September 10 from 6:00 – 7:00pm at Richardson Colonial Funeral Home, with a rosary to be recited at 7:00pm in the funeral chapel. Funeral Mass will be Friday, September 11 at 10:30am at Our Lady of the Gulf Catholic Church, Father Tommy Chen officiating.
