Peter was called to his heavenly home, at the age of 82. He was one of 13 children born in North Hollywood, California to Dutch immigrants, Mengs and Ena where he quickly learned the value of hard work. He enjoyed cooking in the kitchen with his mother as well as butchering and delivering eggs and all kinds of poultry with his father for the customers on the route for their custom poultry business. These early memories resonated throughout his life and were evident in the many stories he told about sibling mischief and wild heartedness in what was once a more rural California.
Peter moved to New York with his family to continue his 37-year career with Singer Link, settled in the Binghamton Area and eventually became a Director at Link Flight Simulation. He was a long-time member of Valley Christian Reformed Church where he practiced his incredible faith, directed the choir for many years, taught Sunday school, lead the singing at Vacation Bible School and fostered life-long friendships with all who could withstand his humor. Whether in his career, his 12 years of driving school bus during retirement for Chenango Valley Schools, or his friendships at Valley CRC, Peter had a larger-than-life persona and was a guiding light to everyone around him.
An avid outdoorsman, perfectionist, craftsman, and music lover Peter spent his retirement years vacationing and fishing on the St. Lawrence River, building intricate wood projects, or just enjoying the outdoors. Above all, Peter was a teacher, mentor, and leader to all and leaves behind a legacy of people whose lives he touched in a way only he could.
Peter is survived by his loving wife of 59 years; Herleen, 3 children, Jeff (Carol), Joel (Jenni) and Elizabeth (Mark); 7 grandchildren, 1 great grandchild, special friends Pete and Jan Vermaat and a host of siblings and relatives throughout the U.S. He taught his children and grandchildren to walk the path of faith no matter the cost, and never took himself too seriously in the process. Quick with a joke and never upset to be the butt of one, Peter was always a joy to be in the presence of.
Peter's work on this earth is now finished but his legacy and guidance will live on in all those who were blessed to know and love him. He will be greatly missed.
